Lyrical Ambush in DuPont Circle

Untitled document

The newest wave of artistic resistance hits DC – progressive performance poetry in the park!

When Cuba's southern shore was invaded by revolutionaries led by Ernesto "Che" Guevara and Fidel Castro in November 1956, the country's leaders paid scant attention at first. After all, a handful of tattered revolutionaries does not often a revolution make.

American national security analysts may have similarly overlooked a local insurgency that ambushed DuPont Circle the evening of Monday, October 6. Hailing itself as the newest threat to the "illegitimate, warmongering fools in the White House," the DC Guerilla Poetry Insurgency commenced an indefinite campaign to "Wake America Up," with a free, 90-minute program of progressive political performance poems and percussive punctuation.

Leah, Sarah, Gabby, Laila, Laurie, Shahid and Joe are not the sort of poets Mrs. Bush invites to dinner.

The guerilla poetry insurgency is currently waging peace on both coasts, stretching America's so-called "national security" infrastructure at a time when many analysts worry it is already challenged by simultaneous, active conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Colombia, the Philippines, and every major American inner city. Organizers of the insurgency hope to galvanize resistance to American imperialism by striking where it matters most: at the hearts & minds of complacent American citizens.

Insurgents will again reclaim DuPont Circle in the name of peace, justice, and the American people on Monday, October 20. Recruits eager to join the resistance (in any capacity, by reading / spitting / sharing poetry, drumming, or listening) are invited to appear unannounced at the next ambush. Anyone with either a voice, hands, or ears is welcome.
