2008-01-18 Moving Words Poetry Competition - Call for Poems

Poets over the age of 18 who live, work, or study in Arlington are invited to submit short poems (no longer than 10 lines) for the MOVING WORDS POETRY COMPETITION. Six poems will be selected for exhibition on posters in Northern Virginia buses from April 2008 through September 2008. Winning poets will receive a $100 honorarium and will be invited to give a public reading of their work at Busboys and Poets in Arlington, VA, in April 2008. MOVING WORDS, launched in 1999 during National Poetry Month, is a program that places poetry on Metrobuses operating in Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax County and Fairfax City. The poems are chosen by a panel of literary professionals, whose criteria is above all literary merit, but also includes a desire to help make the day more pleasant for the area's bus riders. ELIGIBILITY and GUIDELINES Download the call for entries at www.arlingtonarts.org or call 703-228-1854 to have one sent to you. DEADLINE All entries must be received on or before Friday, January 18, 2008. Entries can be submitted by mail, email, or to a drop box at Busboys and Poets in Arlington. We need your stories, photos and support on the Georgia Ave/Pleasant Plains Heritage Trail. Working with Cultural Tourism DC, the ECAC is in the process of establishing a Heritage Trail encompassing Georgia Ave between the Shaw/Howard and Petworth Metro stations documenting the history of this neighborhood. ALL stakeholders of this area are invited to be a part of a working group that will determine the sites, stories and images that are portrayed. At our January 19th meeting, we will meet briefly, and afterwards a group will travel down to MLK Library for research, with another group staying behind to scan and document photos. You are welcome to participate in either group. Meetings are every third Saturday of the month from 12-2. All are welcome.

SALSA, The Social Action & Leadership School for Activists Presents a free screening of CHOCOLATE CITY. Thousands of dollars poured in...Thousands of people forced out A story of displacement and poetic resistance in Washington, DC. Filmed by DC Native Ellie Walton and her associate Sam Wild. In 2003, over 400 families from the Arthur Capper housing project in South East Washington DC were forced from their homes as part of a massive nation-wide redevelopment programme. SALSA invites you to a free screening of Chocolate City, which explores the rapid gentrification of Washington DC through the eyes of a group of local women displaced from their city center homes to make way for massive econstruction. This event is free and open to the public but a $5 donation is suggested to help with the space cost. No one will be turned away. Please reserve your seat by registering!
